New air-hardening steel

New York, NY-Trial test in “UNION BETON”
The new air-hardening steel is a new steel developed to increase the wear resistance in application where is necessary to have a good balance between toughness and hardness. The hardness of this steel is about 53-58 HRC and is due to a full martensitic structure (figure 1).

Martensitic Structure

Figure 1. Full martensitic structure. This photo is made using a SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) of Padova (ITAY) University.

To compare how this new steel works we have made a trial test in a quarry comparing the behaviour of this steel with the old one.
QUARRY: UNION BETON Castions di strada (UD)
CRUSHER (HSI): CEDARAPIDS HSI 5048 a tre martelli
Feeding Size: 30-160 mm

The results shows that the new one maintained the profile for much more hours and this guarantee the best setting gape to have a better crushed material for much more time.

Martensitic Steel Graph

Figure 3. The profile means the thickness of the blow bar between the tip of the hammer and the rotor. The graph shows how the new martensitic steel maintained for many more hours the profile before starting to wear. The fact that the blue line started with a length higher then the yellow one is due to the different stating position of the blow bar and this did not affect the test because in just about 17 hours the length are the same, but this means that the martensitic steel stated to wear while the new one maintains the profile.
